Patchwork and A special Needlework Box

This autumn I decided on a new pastime, a couple of months ago I signed up for The General Wives with the Fat Quarter Shop and the first block came in last week. Some years ago I attended a patchwork course and learned some technique's.

Surprisingly it all came back to me after staring at the pattern for an hour!! I hardly dared cut into it, It’s a bit under 12 ½” which it should be, but no doubt I will learn to be more precise on the other blocks, it’s whopper of a quilt 102” square and am glad it will take a year to stitch it all! The whole quilt will be stitched  by hand, it looked easier that way, well for me that is!  The button in the centre was given to me by my neighbour who told me that it's quite old:)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have got the patchwork bug now! I bought these fabric scraps at the Birmingham Quilt show, and started the stitch some nine patches, there are a lot more to come.
The “Taupe Tumbling Blocks Pin Cushion” is a kit by Kylie Irvine and I made it by hand. Blue bird was a kit bought by Cupcake &Cottons UK, I have not stitched it's wings on yet. Some years back I made Mathilda which was a freebie by Mary Beale.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Finally I like to show you my mother’s needlework box, it’s very old and my elder sister handed it recently to my niece who has already made it her own, so nice to see it treasured in the family and used! You can guess where my stuff will end up :))

Thank you very much for leaving your comments on my last post; they as always make my day :)) Hope your autumn is as wonderful as ours!!

I love the sewing box! Good luck with the patchwork, I'm absolutely horrible at quilting. No matter what, I never can get my seams to line up right, or the pieces all cut the same, so the end result is very lopsided.

Wat een uitdaging. Mij lijkt het erg moeilijk om aan te leren. Ben benieuwd naar het eindresultaat.
lieve groeten Liliane (hopelijk ken je me nog)

Your patchwork is lovely. Working a block a month is a really doable way to make a quilt. It will be stunning when you are finished I just know it will!

How lovely that your niece has adopted your mother's needlework box. Someone already in the next generation who appreciates such things! I love your patchwork so far! Lovely colors too! Precision was always my weakness with sewing patchwork. Which is why I fell in love with English paper piecing -- less precision required. lol!

Loved seeing the pics of your mother's sewing box and so happy that your niece will cherish the box.
All your patchwork projects are lovely and I especially like the tumbler pin cushion.

Love it all! Earlier this year, I caught the quilting bug, and made a lovely little tabletopper, but then hit a wall with my machine abilities which I can't overcome. I need to get beyond my frustration to make another (full-sized) quilt happen!

Oh Bertie - I love your mother's needlework box - I have one very similar and precious since it was made by Richard's dad for his new wife as a wedding gift - it would be the first thing out of the house if ever there was a fire!
Love your patchwork projects! Love,
J

Mooi dat de naaibox van je moeder zo'n goede bestemming heeft gekregen.
Succes met het patchwork. Dat is een techniek die ik niet beheers, maar een mens kan niet alles natuurlijk.
Lieve groeten.

Hi Bertie, lovely to see photos of your quilting projects. The BOTM looks fab and it does seem like a great way to accomplish a large project. The japanese fabrics are scrummy (is that a word?)lol and will make a wonderful quilt. Lucky Sandra for getting your Mums sewing box but I bet she loves it!
Hugs
Britta

Lieve groetjes

Hi Bertie,
So great that you're quilting now! I love the Japanese fabrics you have used in your projects. The BOM is going to be great and it is the best way to work on a big quilting project.
As for for the sewing box, it is a treasure, indeed. Those items are filled with memories from times past.... So great to keep them alive ;-)
Thank you for this wonderful post....
