A darning sampler from The Netherlands. A lady living near my sister found out that I love these pieces of fabric!! to my surprise it was this example. I did show this sampler in the very beginning of my blog but did not give you any information, (blogfright).
Unfortunately the date is unknown and who it belonged to is also a mystery. The sampler has got some rust and dirt patches, I did not dare to clean the sampler and is not advised by the experts.
The back colours do not differ a lot from the front a sign that it has not been displayed a lot. I did receive it without a frame and rolled up, it had been in the attic of her aunts house.
I do love the crown and de darning patterns surrounding it. If any of you have any idea how old it might be I would love to hear from you. You do see a lot of samplers in The Netherlands with only the initials of the maker.
The whole sampler is stitched with silk threads on an uneven linen with different darning patterns.
This exemplar was bought in Burford, Oxfordshire by my DH, we often visited the UK when we lived in Holland and I did find some lovely "fabrics" on our travels in Great Britain.
I do not know what "Braved a Thousand years", means, but am open to suggestions. (17.42 hours today Katherine wrote):
Ye mariners of England!
That guard our native seas;
Whose flag has braved a thousand years,
The battle and the breeze!
- Thomas Campbell, Ye Mariners of England
Thank you Katherine!!
It did occur to me that the whole sampler should have been filled in, the sampler is made with wool threads and the material looks like cotton canvas, but that is only my interpretation.
Thank you so much for your lovely comments on my Hillside Samplings thread keep, your comments always make my day:))) and hope to display some stitching soon.

Oh Bertie! You're so lucky to have these beautiful pieces! Thank you so much for sharing them with us. I love them both!
Bertie, what wonderful treasures!!!! Imagine how many hands have held it and how many eyes have look at it!!!! The history is incredible when you think of the years that have passed......so neat that you have it. Isn't the saying Braved a thousand years from Rob Roy or a famous Scotsman that led the battle to free Scotland? You'll have to ask Erna, at Scotland and Stitching...she is the expert on Scottish things!!!!! I think it is absolutely amazing that stitching lasts for years, and that you have saved some!!!
Happy weekend, hope your thumb heals soon!
Hugs,
Margaret B
Here's help with your "braved a thousand years" quotation -

Hello Bertie , beautiful samplers, I love the darning one, and I agree with Katherine, I too think it's English ( the flag)

Ouch! I hope your thumb heals quickly. What fascinating samplers to have in your posession. They are both lovely.
Wow Bertie, lucky you to own two such beauties! The darning sampler especially!
Hi Bertie, thanks for sharing those with us. They are really something to see. I get very caught up in wondering about the person who stitched these samplers. It's wonderful that they have survived all these years.
Bertie, wow, what treasures! I wish I could help with the ages on the samplers, all I can do is admire them. I like the suggestion that maybe it does come from the verse Katherine mentioned. ?? I hope your thumb heals quickly!
Oh wow! So loving all your beautiful samplers. I love the "Braved 1000 years" quote. So pretty.
Thanks for finding me, and commenting on my blog. Your blog is fantastic, and I'm so glad to find a new blog friend. We get to know each other pretty well through this little medium. It's like having a great stitching guild with 40 or 50 friends from around the world!
Hugs.
Bertie,
Loved seeing your wonderful samplers...so beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Hope you're soon back to stitching!
Bertie, your samplers are gorgeous! I just love the colors! Amazing!
And your thread keep in lovely. So nice that you have dedicated it to your mother. My grandmother sewed everything she could get her hands on too! Isn't it wonderful to still feel close to them through our favorite pastime? I think that is why I love to stitch, it makes me feel close to my grandmother. Great finishing on your thread keep too. I know you will cherish it for years to come!
